Poor sleep, trouble concentrating, mood changes, and unexplained weight gain can leave a woman wondering why she no longer feels like herself. She may blame stress or a busy schedule and keep pushing through, even when those changes begin to affect her daily life. For Black women, whose concerns are often dismissed or minimized, getting answers can be especially difficult. Dr. Tiffany Parks, founder of Parks Wellness, encourages women to speak up about what has changed and seek care before their symptoms become overwhelming.
MadameNoire sat down with physician Dr. Tiffany Parks to discuss how women can talk with their doctors about new symptoms and get a thorough evaluation. Parks explains which changes may signal perimenopause, why other possible causes deserve attention, and how fibroids or past surgeries can complicate the picture. She also offers guidance on hormone therapy and midlife weight changes, along with practical questions women can bring to their next medical appointment.

MadameNoire: Black women frequently report having their pain, fatigue, weight changes, and other symptoms minimized. How can this affect the recognition and treatment of perimenopause?
When a woman repeatedly hears that her fatigue is just stress, her weight changes are a matter of willpower, or her pain is something to endure, she may stop bringing those concerns up. That can delay care. It can also mean that conditions such as anemia, thyroid disease, or fibroids are missed while everyone assumes the symptoms are hormonal, or that perimenopause is missed while everyone assumes they are caused by stress.
I want to hear the full story: what changed, when it began, and how it affects her life. Black women deserve an evaluation that takes both their symptoms and their concerns seriously.
