(AURN News) — Democratic U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens of Michigan shook up one of the nation’s tightest Senate races Sunday by endorsing Republican Mike Rogers over Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, who defeated her in the primary. Standing beside Rogers in Detroit at Bishop Marvin Winans’ Perfecting Church, she tried to explain why.
“My vote for Senate is going to be with Mike Rogers. And I will tell you why. Because we have to stand with country,” Stevens said.

About an hour later, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel said Stevens was no longer a party member. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called her endorsement a “despicable betrayal.”
El-Sayed says he’s focused elsewhere.
“At the end of the day, I actually don’t think about Haley Stevens,” El-Sayed said. “This is a state of 10 million people who deserve a lot better from the government. I’m a lot more focused on the 9,999,998 that are not the ones you guys are talking about,” he added.
Virgie Rollins, chair of the DNC’s Black Caucus, said Stevens used Black Michiganders for a “political stunt.”
Several members of Stevens’ staff, including her chief of staff and communications director, resigned after the endorsement.
