A transformative initiative is serving up major opportunities for local culinary entrepreneurs in Chicago. The Economic Development Center (EDC) at the Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA)—in partnership with the Lewis Innovation Hub and the Center for Changing Lives (CCL)—has launched its inaugural Top Foodpreneur Pitch Competition Accelerator, a dynamic program designed to turn culinary vision into sustainable business growth.
The six-week intensive accelerator offers food business founders tailored, industry-specific training to scale their concepts and master the fundamentals of the marketplace. Participants have navigated a comprehensive curriculum tackling essential commercial pillars:
- Week 1 (Storytelling & Leadership): Brand narrative craft and customer communication.
- Week 2 (Product Development & Tech): Recipe validation, specialized packaging, and ghost kitchens.
- Week 3 (Marketing & GovCon): Social media strategy, food safety certifications, and government contracting.
- Week 4 (Finance & Funding): Unit economics, margin analysis, and securing non-dilutive capital.
- Week 5 (Operations & Scaling): Food compliance, human resources, and sustainable operations.
- Week 6 (Pitch Prep): High-stakes coaching sessions to refine presentations for judges.
The Stakes: Graduation and Pitch Day
The program reaches its climax on Thursday, September 10, 2026, running from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Lewis University’s St. Augustine College campus in Uptown, Chicago.
Following the graduation ceremony, nine selected finalists will take the stage to pitch their business ventures before a live panel of judges. At stake is $30,000 in total cash prizes to fund operations and fuel expansion:
- First Place: $20,000
- Second Place: $8,000
- Third Place: $2,000
Community-Driven Economic Impact
Founded by refugees in 1981, CMAA supports more than 5,000 immigrants, refugees, and local community members across Chicagoland each year. Through its Economic Development Center, CMAA works directly to close the racial and ethnic wealth gap by providing vital resources and technical assistance to small businesses.
Joined by the Center for Changing Lives—dedicated to helping underserved entrepreneurs overcome economic barriers—and the Romeoville-based Lewis Innovation Hub, this initiative highlights how regional collaboration can cultivate local talent, sustain neighborhood economies, and turn homegrown recipes into thriving enterprises.
