Bomb explodes in DR Congo killing Seven Children, leaving three others hospitalized in serious condition

A strange device, believed to be a discarded bomb has exploded and killed 7 people and injured 3 others in the Rutshuru section of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
All the ten victims of the deadly explosion happen to be children with the three survivors reported to be currently hospitalized in critical condition.
The incident occurred on Saturday, the 12th of September at the Rugunga village in the Gikoro locality of Jomba grouping, which is the Rutshuru territory in North Kivu.
This is according to a report from the Congo River Alliance (AFC) and March 23’s affiliated sources.
Reports from the affected villagers, reveal that a child had discovered a metallic object laying around, picked it thinking it will come in handy as something to play with and took it to share with his other 10 mates.
However, as they were handling the strange item, the article turned out to be an ordnance which was either dropped or discarded in a field without being detonated.
And as more than ten children started playing around with the object the bomb detonated.
The resulting explosion killed seven children, leaving three others seriously injured.
Victims were rushed to the Rutshuru General Referral Hospital for treatment.
Unexploded munitions remain a persistent danger for civilians in this conflict-affected region.
In another incident, a group of armed persons stormed into a radio station and launched serious vandalism.

Mwenga Community Radio (RCM) in South Kivu was compelled to suspend broadcasts after unidentified attackers broke in the night of September 9, 2026. They ransacked and vandalized the radio station, stealing broadcasting equipment, a laptop with archives and program files, phones, cash and batteries.
One suspect is reportedly in custody.
The RCM says it has faced prior threats to its journalists.
According to Journalists in Danger, they are demanding an investigation and urging authorities to help rebuild the station and protect media workers in Mwenga.
Meanwhile also the AFC and M23 Coalition has declared several days of National Mourning After Deadly Bukavu Fire
A fire that recently reduced to ashes the Tshimpunda neighborhood of Bukavu killed 26 people, including 20 girls and six boys.
The flames spread to Mosala and Nongo primary schools.
Dozens more were injured and remain under treatment in the city.
AFC/M23 has declared three days of mourning, with both the national and rebel coalition flags flying at half-mast across areas under the movement’s control.
The group has called for a full investigation into the fire’s cause and appealed to humanitarian organizations to support affected families.
