Kenya’s resident High Commission in Kingston, Jamaica — the country’s first permanent diplomatic mission in Jamaica, opened on July 13, 2026 when Ambassador Karisa Mwenda assumed duty as inaugural High Commissioner, transferring Jamaica-related functions that had previously been managed from Nairobi’s embassy in Havana, Cuba.
Kenya planted its diplomatic flag in Kingston on July 13, 2026, ending a decade-long arrangement that routed all Jamaica-related consular and political business through Havana.
For Kenyans scattered across Jamaica and neighbouring Caribbean states, the Kingston mission is intended to dramatically shorten wait times for passport renewals, civil registrations and emergency travel documents — services that previously required routing through Havana.
Beyond consular relief, the mission is expected to give Kenyan businesses a permanent commercial foothold in the Caricom market, with officials targeting sectors including agriculture, ICT, tourism, logistics and the creative economy. Jamaica serves as a gateway to the wider Caricom bloc, and improved market intelligence from a resident envoy could open new export corridors.
At the multilateral level, the mission is positioned to strengthen Kenya–Jamaica coordination on shared priorities such as climate justice, sustainable development financing and reform of global governance institutions — areas where both countries have historically aligned.
