By Zoila Palma: Mexico has recorded the violent deaths of 14 mayors since President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024, with the latest victim, Temoac Mayor Valentín Lavín Romero, shot dead inside the town hall in the eastern state of Morelos.
The killings have renewed concerns about the growing influence of organized crime over municipal governments and the increasing risks faced by local officials, El Pais reports.
Oaxaca has recorded the highest number of murdered mayors during the period, with five cases, followed by Michoacán with four.
Lavín Romero had previously survived an attack in January when gunmen fired at his vehicle along the Mexico-Oaxaca highway. His killing adds to a tally that includes three cases in 2024, eight in 2025 and three so far this year.
Security and organized crime expert Víctor Sánchez said the killings point to a broader struggle by criminal organizations to control municipalities, which can provide access to local police, advance information about federal security operations and intelligence on rival groups.
