At least 50 Malian soldiers and five Russian Africa Corps paramilitaries were killed in a major jihadist assault on the Dioura military camp in central Mali, according to security and local sources cited by Africanews and AFP.
The attack, carried out last Thursday in the Mopti region, was claimed by the Al-Qaeda-linked Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM). Some local and security sources put the military death toll even higher, at between 60 and 80, while dozens of soldiers were reportedly taken prisoner.
The assault ranks among the deadliest attacks on Mali’s armed forces in recent years. The country has faced a prolonged security crisis since 2012, driven by jihadist groups, separatist movements and criminal networks. Mali’s military-led government has also deepened security ties with Russia after turning away from former colonial power France.
Mali’s army said it launched air and ground operations against the attackers and reported striking militants attempting to withdraw from the area.
