WAG President Applauds Newspaper’s Continued Support for Literary Development, Cultural Awareness and the Promotion of Reading and Writing in The Gambia

Professor Cherno Omar Barry, President of the Writers’ Association of The Gambia (WAG) and Professor of Comparative Literature, has commended the Daily Observer for its continued support for Gambian literature, literary activities and the association’s programmes.
In a letter to the newspaper’s editorial team dated 19 October 2026, Professor Barry expressed appreciation for its contributions to literary development and coverage of WAG activities, recognising the media’s important role in promoting creative expression, cultural awareness and intellectual engagement.
Responding to Professor Barry’s message, Professor Kebeli Demba Nyima of The Daily Observer praised WAG and its current leadership for their efforts to advance Gambian literature and create opportunities for established and emerging writers.
Professor Nyima described the association as an important institution in The Gambia’s literary and cultural landscape, commending Professor Barry’s leadership and commitment to promoting books, poetry, scholarship and creative writing.
He noted that the responsibility of a national writers’ association extends beyond organising literary events. It includes nurturing talent, encouraging reading, preserving indigenous languages and connecting younger generations with the country’s rich literary and oral traditions.
Professor Nyima reaffirmed The Daily Observer’s commitment to supporting writers, both Gambian and non-Gambian, and helping them bring their literary works to publication. He said the doors of The Observer Press are open to established and aspiring authors, regardless of nationality, background or financial circumstances.
As part of this commitment, the Daily Observer Press will provide free editorial assistance, proofreading, manuscript formatting and book publishing services to writers seeking publication.
Professor Nyima explained that the initiative aims to encourage authorship, reduce the financial barriers facing writers and strengthen the culture of reading and writing. He invited poets, novelists, historians, biographers, researchers and other authors to submit their manuscripts, assuring them of editorial and publishing support.
