National Climate Change Council holds 1st meeting to strengthen Belize’s Climate response

By Zoila Palma:  Belize has taken another step toward strengthening its national climate governance with the inaugural meeting of the Belize National Climate Change Council (BNCCC). The meeting was convened by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management through the Climate Change Department.

The BNCCC was established under the Climate Change and Carbon Markets Initiatives Act, 2026, bringing together representatives from key government ministries, the private sector, non-governmental organizations and the Indigenous community.

The Council is intended to strengthen coordination and promote a whole-of-society approach to addressing climate change.

Among its responsibilities, the Council will provide strategic direction on climate change, coordinate national climate action and advise the Government on climate policies, targets and priorities. It will also support climate measures, monitor implementation and contribute to the development of Belize’s national climate resilience efforts.

The Council will further have a role in approving carbon projects and supporting the development of carbon-accounting methodologies.
