By Zoila Palma: Japan has recorded more than 100,000 people aged 100 or older for the first time, setting another record in a country renowned for its longevity.
According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the number of centenarians reached 107,677 in September, marking the 56th consecutive year of growth and an increase of nearly 8,000 from the previous year.
Women account for the overwhelming majority of Japan’s centenarian population, with 94,298 women representing about 88% of the total.
Health Minister Kenichiro Ueno welcomed the figures, saying he was pleased that so many people are remaining active and healthy into advanced age.
Japan consistently ranks among the countries with the highest life expectancies, CNN reports.
The World Bank reported an average life expectancy of 84 years in Japan in 2024, compared with 79 years in the United States.
Experts have linked Japan’s longevity to factors including healthy diets, an advanced healthcare system and cultural practices such as “ikigai,” a philosophy centered on finding purpose, value and enjoyment in life.
The country is now home to some of the world’s oldest people, including 114-year-old Fuyo Kishimoto and 112-year-old Hikaru Kato.
