CAMTEL Receives Second Equipment Shipment for Cameroon Mobile Network Expansion

Cameroon’s state-owned telecommunications operator CAMTEL  has received a second batch of equipment for its Mobile Network Expansion (MNE) project as it moves to increase mobile connectivity across the country.

The equipment arrived in Zamengoe on Thursday, September 17, from China through the Autonomous Port of Kribi. The shipment comprised 35 40-foot containers, marking another phase in CAMTEL’s planned expansion of its mobile network.

Under the MNE project, CAMTEL plans to deploy 245 new mobile sites, adding to its existing network of 473 sites. The expansion is expected to increase network coverage and capacity, with particular attention being given to underserved rural communities.

CAMTEL said the project will extend connectivity from departmental and district capitals to peri-urban areas and villages, supporting access to digital services for communities across the country.

The project also includes the decongestion of 122 existing sites and upgrades to the transport capacity of metropolitan network loops. CAMTEL is further planning to expand energy infrastructure and modernise its billing system as part of the broader network development programme.

The operator also intends to strengthen its technology capabilities through new innovation infrastructure, including cloud computing, as it works to support growing demand for digital services.

The expansion is being implemented under the leadership of CAMTEL Managing Director Judith Yah Sunday Achidi. The company said the MNE project forms part of its efforts to develop digital infrastructure capable of supporting emerging connectivity needs and expanding access to digital opportunities across Cameroon.

The network expansion comes as CAMTEL continues to strengthen its position in Cameroon’s telecommunications market alongside established operators including MTN Cameroon and Orange Cameroon.
