International News: New breast cancer treatment combination approved by FDA

By Zoila Palma:  The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new treatment combination for adults with a type of advanced or metastatic breast cancer, including Stage IV disease.

The combination of Inluriyo and Verzenio is intended for patients whose tumors are estrogen receptor (ER)-positive, HER2-negative and carry an ESR1 mutation, and whose cancer has progressed following at least one hormonal treatment, Reuters report.

The approval is based on a late-stage clinical trial involving 159 patients with this type of advanced breast cancer.

Patients who received the two-drug combination went a median of 11.1 months before their cancer worsened, compared with 5.5 months among those who received Inluriyo alone. Inluriyo was previously approved by the FDA in September 2025 for metastatic breast cancer with ESR1 mutations.

Inluriyo is a daily oral medication that targets estrogen receptors involved in the growth of some breast cancers, while Verzenio is taken twice daily and works by slowing the division of cancer cells.

The combination can cause side effects and carries important safety warnings.

Reported effects include diarrhea, nausea, fatigue and decreased white blood cell counts, while more serious risks include severe diarrhea, neutropenia, lung inflammation, liver problems and blood clots. Inluriyo also carries a warning regarding potential harm to an embryo or fetus during pregnancy.

The drugmaker said the treatment combination is now available in the United States.
