The life and legacy of late gospel music legend Richard Smallwood will be honored during this year’s HARLEM WEEK celebration with a special tribute at “A Great Day in Harlem” at Grant National Memorial Park on Sunday, Aug. 9.
The Gospel Caravan, featuring local, national and international gospel artists, will celebrate Smallwood’s enduring impact on gospel music with a special commemorative performance.
Smallwood died in 2025 at the age of 77 from complications related to kidney failure. During a career that spanned nearly five decades, he released 10 studio albums and 10 live albums, becoming one of the most influential figures in contemporary gospel music.
He received eight Grammy Award nominations, winning one Grammy, and earned multiple GMA Dove Awards and Stellar Awards throughout his career. Smallwood was best known for his signature song, “Total Praise,” which has become a modern gospel standard and remains one of the most performed songs in church repertoires around the world.
“A Great Day in Harlem” is HARLEM WEEK’s first major public outdoor event. The celebration features an International Village with vendors and exhibitors offering arts and crafts, jewelry, clothing, unique accessories, and international merchandise, along with food, family activities and live entertainment.
