North Carolina’s attempt to build a college football powerhouse under Bill Belichick has taken another wild turn. UNC general manager Michael Lombardi resigned on September 3 after spending more than a month on paid administrative leave while the university investigated allegations surrounding its football program. Lombardi, a longtime Belichick confidant who reportedly made $1.5 million annually as the highest-paid general manager in college football, said he stepped down so the Tar Heels could focus on the 2026 season. However, UNC made it clear that the investigation will continue.
And apparently, Lombardi was only part of the story. According to WRAL, outside attorneys have interviewed current and former players, parents and staff members while digging into the overall culture of the football program. Investigators have reportedly sought documents and screenshots of text conversations while asking questions about everything from potential drug use to relationships involving members of the program.
