Deadly motorcycle crash claims life of Guinea Grass man

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A 25 year old motorcyclist lost his life following a traffic accident in Orange Walk Town on Thursday night.

Police say the accident occurred at around 9:40 p.m. near the intersection of Munioz Street and Otro Benque Road.

When officers arrived, they found a white Ford E350 van on Munioz Street and a man lying several feet away with serious injuries.

Initial investigations indicate that the van, driven by 61 year old Antonio Novelo, was travelling along Otro Benque Road toward Trial Farm Village and was making a left turn onto Munioz Street.

Police say 25 year old Lorenzo Antonio Castro of Guinea Grass Village was travelling behind the van on a motorcycle and allegedly attempted to overtake it as the van was turning.

The motorcycle collided with the driver’s side of the van, causing Castro to fall from the motorcycle.

Castro was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment. He was pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m.

Police reported that the motorcycle had no licence plate and that no insurance or licence sticker was found during initial checks. Investigators also reported that the motorcycle was travelling without a light.

Both vehicles were impounded for inspection, while the van driver was detained pending further investigation.

Castro’s body remains at the Northern Regional Hospital morgue awaiting a post mortem examination.

Police investigations continue.
