Chon Saan opens in San Pedro today, bringing its famous Chinese cuisine to Ambergris Caye

By Breaking Belize News Staff: One of Belize’s most recognizable restaurant brands is expanding to Ambergris Caye as Chon Saan Palace officially opens its doors in San Pedro today, Saturday, October 10, at noon.

Restaurant owner and Mesopotamia Area Representative Lee Mark Chang confirmed the opening to Breaking Belize News (BBN) this morning, sharing photos of the final preparations at the new establishment.

The restaurant, located on Middle Street in downtown San Pedro, diagonally across from Elvi’s Kitchen, occupies the ground floor of the Sun & Reef Hotel, where a casino previously operated.

Chang said the restaurant will initially accommodate approximately 48 diners, with nine tables available. However, plans are already being considered to expand operations onto the building’s second floor.

The restaurant will operate from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and reopen from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., with Tuesdays designated as its weekly day off.

Chang also indicated that Chon Saan remains open to recruiting talented individuals as the business expands.

The San Pedro location will feature many of the dishes that have made Chon Saan a household name in Belize, including its popular fried chicken, Chinese specialties, noodles, soups and other favourites. The restaurant will initially offer dine-in and takeout services, with delivery services planned for a later stage.

Chon Saan’s history dates back to 1974, when Chang’s parents, Armando Chang and his wife, established the original family restaurant on Douglas Jones Street in Belize City. Over the decades, the business grew into one of the country’s best-known Chinese restaurants, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024.

The opening marks another chapter in the restaurant’s more than five decades of operations, bringing its longstanding culinary tradition to residents and visitors of Belize’s leading tourism destination.
