Apple iPhones recovered from a sunken cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz are being advertised at unusually low prices (below-market rates) in Iran under ads called “war booty,” RT reported.
ProPakistani earlier reported that iPhones were recently recovered from a container ship that sank in the Strait of Hormuz. They are now being advertised for sale in Iran as “war booty” at unusually low prices.
Hundreds of Iranian fishermen on Friday headed into the strait in small boats to collect new iPhones and French perfume that spilled from the Singapore-flagged GFS Pride. “We heard a container ship sank, so we’re going to collect iPhones and perfume,” one man said in a video. The ship went down on October 14.
Iran Police Warn Buyers Against iPhones
Deputy head of Iran’s cyber police Colonel Javad Mokhtarrezaei said scammers could post fake ads for cheap phones, collect deposits or delivery fees, and then disappear. He urged buyers not to pay anything before seeing the phone and confirming the seller’s identity.
He also said that even real phones could have hidden damage, since seawater can corrode circuit boards, batteries, and displays. Phones that cannot be registered in Iran’s Hamta device registry may also lose mobile network service, and buyers would get no warranty or official invoice.
Truth?
Singapore’s maritime authority confirmed the sinking and said all 21 crew members were evacuated safely. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards earlier posted that the ship hit a mine on an unauthorized route.
Meanwhile, fact-checkers, including Iran’s Factnameh and Al Jazeera, have flagged several viral recovery videos as AI-generated.
