Google’s Gemini hacked 3 companies’ systems during cybersecurity tests

Google has revealed that its Gemini AI model accessed three companies’ computer systems during cybersecurity tests after finding or guessing login credentials.

The incidents occurred in May and were discovered in July, but were made public after questions from The Wall Street Journal. Google said Gemini guessed a password in one case and found credentials stored in a database in two others. The affected companies were not identified.

Google said the model stopped in all three cases and the organisations were notified. Similar incidents involving AI systems from OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta have raised concerns about safeguards as increasingly autonomous AI agents gain access to computers and the internet.

Iran executes man accused of sharing missile site information

Iran has executed Hossein Pedaran after accusing him of providing Israeli intelligence with information about missile sites in Isfahan province, according to the country’s judiciary.

Authorities said Pedaran was convicted of espionage and intelligence cooperation with Israel. The judiciary added that Iran’s Supreme Court had upheld his death sentence, although officials did not disclose when he was arrested or tried.

Iranian media had not previously reported the case. The execution comes amid increased arrests and executions linked to the Middle East war and nationwide protests that peaked in January, according to Iranian authorities.

UK urges households to prepare for national emergencies

British households are being encouraged to stock basic supplies, including tinned food and drinking water, as the government strengthens preparations for possible national emergencies.

The advice aims to help people manage during the first few days of disruptions caused by floods, extreme heat, cyberattacks or security threats. Officials say household preparedness would allow emergency services to prioritise vulnerable people.

The campaign forms part of wider efforts to improve the UK’s resilience. The Cabinet Office is also developing a “war book” outlining how government departments would respond if an international conflict affected Britain, including potential disruption to essential services.

Davido announces three-night National Theatre residency

Davido is set to make history with a three-night residency at Lagos’ remodelled National Theatre on December 17, 18 and 19, 2026.

The Grammy-nominated singer will headline “Oriadé: The Residency”, becoming the first Afrobeats artiste to hold a residency at the iconic venue. He is expected to perform tracks from his 13-song album alongside favourites from earlier projects.

The residency coincides with Davido’s 15th year in music. “Oriadé” features collaborations with Black Sherif, Mayorkun, FOLA, Leon Thomas, Aya Nakamura and others. Davido previously said he recorded much of the album at home with his wife and children.

Death of 37 miners in NSCDC custody shakes the country

Tension has risen in Niger State after more than 37 suspected illegal miners reportedly died in Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps custody following their arrests on September 15 and 16.

Witnesses alleged that some detainees were beaten and that officers attempted to dispose of the bodies without informing their families. The NSCDC confirmed several deaths but said the cause had not been established and investigations were ongoing. The remains were deposited at General Hospital, Minna, for examination.

Protests later broke out in parts of Minna, including Tunga, Maitumbi and Bosso Road. Security agencies were deployed as authorities worked to contain the unrest and restore calm.
