Dangote Refinery has taken its “Made in Nigeria” story to New York’s iconic Times Square, placing the Nigerian energy company before a global audience as it advances its landmark initial public offering. The Times Square billboard campaign comes days after the Dangote Refinery IPO opened in Nigeria, with the company seeking to raise up to $2.1 billion and broaden ownership of the Lagos based refinery. According to Reuters, the offering is Africa’s largest IPO to date, with shares priced at ₦525 and the refinery valued at about $49 billion. The promotional appearance in one of the world’s most recognisable commercial districts places Nigeria’s largest industrial investment directly within an international financial and consumer marketplace.
The campaign also highlights the scale of the Dangote Refinery as an increasingly important player in Nigeria’s energy sector and global petroleum products market. The refinery currently has a crude processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, according to the company, and is being expanded towards 1.4 million barrels per day. It produces products including petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and LPG, with the company stating that its fuels are already being exported across continents. The IPO itself offers ordinary Nigerians an opportunity to participate in ownership of the refinery, while the company is simultaneously presenting the asset to international audiences as a major African industrial and energy platform.
Taking the Dangote Refinery brand to Times Square therefore carries significance beyond advertising. It connects a Nigerian made industrial asset with one of the world’s most visible centres for business, finance and global brands at a time when African companies are seeking deeper international capital market participation. The refinery has become a major component of Nigeria’s strategy to increase domestic refining and reduce reliance on imported petroleum products, while its planned expansion could further strengthen the country’s position as a regional supplier of refined fuels. With the IPO now underway and reports that Dangote is considering a future US listing, the Times Square campaign places the Nigerian refinery within a broader global investment narrative built around African industrial capacity, energy security and locally developed infrastructure.
