Belize and Taiwan launch 4-year Disaster Risk Management Project

By Zoila Palma:  The Governments of Belize and Taiwan have partnered to strengthen Belize’s ability to prepare for and respond to natural disasters through the launch of the Belize Multi-Hazard Risk Management Capacity Building Project.

The four-year initiative will focus on improving hazard monitoring, forecasting, early warning systems and emergency response capabilities. Particular attention will be given to critical areas such as flood and wildfire management, with the goal of better protecting communities, natural resources and essential infrastructure.

The project was formalized with the signing of a joint Memorandum of Understanding by Minister of the Public Service, Disaster Risk Management and Enterprise Henry Charles Usher, Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management Orlando Habet, and Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Belize Amino Chi.

The initiative will also strengthen coordination among the National Emergency Management Organization, National Meteorological Service, National Hydrological Service and Forest Department.
