10 Years Since You Left Us
My dear Auntie Nyanga,
It is 10 years today since you left us, but it feels like yesterday.
You were my mother’s youngest sister, but you were more than an auntie to us — you were a second mother. You lived in Abidjan with your husband at worked the African Development Bank ADB, and our childhood was blessed because of you.
We had an exchange visit— one year we all go to Abidjan for holiday, the next year your family comes to Banjul. Those holidays shaped us.
You were so kind, so beautiful, so accommodating.
And I will never forget — every summer you gifted me a gold chain and earrings. And every single time I returned to Banjul, I had lost one earring. And you would just smile… and give me another one. That was who you were. So forgiving. So loving.
You and my mother had an unbreakable bond. After your parents died early, my mother raised you like her own daughter. You were more than sisters.
That is why when my mother passed in May 2016, you couldn’t survive it. You followed her in September. I will never forget your voice on the phone when you called to condole me, you said, “Your mother loved me so much, I wonder if I can survive her death.”
Indeed, you truly loved each other.
You lived a dignified, respectable life. A life of class and kindness.
On this 10th anniversary, we remember you with love. We have not forgotten you, and we will never forget you.
May Allah forgive your shortcomings, overlook your mistakes, and grant you Jannatul Firdaus. May He reunite you with your parents and with my mother, your beloved sister, in the highest Jannah.
Ameen.
We love you, Nyansin. Continue to rest in Peace..
