The Crown Finds Her: Bernella Velinor Is Miss Universe Saint Lucia 2026

There is a particular kind of magic that happens on Saint Lucia soil — the kind that doesn’t announce itself, it simply arrives, sun-warmed and certain. I have spent three years on the other side of this pageant, as its host, watching hopefuls take the stage under those lights, learning the exact cadence of a room holding its breath. This year, for the first time, I sat in the virtual audience instead of behind the mic. And still — still — I felt every second of it in my chest. St. Lucia has been my second home for longer than I can properly explain, and there are certain crownings you simply cannot watch from a distance. This was one of them. Let Her Inspire You — the island’s own words, and never more fitting than on this night.

So let me say, without a shred of editorial neutrality, because I have none to offer here: I am thrilled. Bernella Velinor is Miss Universe Saint Lucia 2026, and it feels less like an upset and more like destiny finally catching up to itself.

A Selection Season Built Like a Runway Season

The road to the crown opened in January 2026 and ran, deliberately and dramatically, through to June 27th — a season-long arc that put twelve delegates through a gauntlet of tasks designed to test far more than poise. This wasn’t pageantry as spectacle. It was pageantry as proving ground.

By the final stretch, the field had narrowed to a trio that could have anchored any cover story: Chancy Fontenell, Danielle Private, and Bernella Velinor. Three women, three distinct energies, one crown. And when the dust settled and the envelope opened, it was Velinor who stepped forward to claim it — poised to represent Saint Lucia at the 75th Diamond Edition of Miss Universe, a milestone year for a competition that has always known how to make an entrance.

Ten Years in the Making

There is a name that belongs in this story as much as the winner’s, and it is Joycie Mederick’s. As National Director of Miss Universe Saint Lucia and founder of Cinnamon Productions, Mederick has spent a full decade shaping this pageant into what it is today — and 2026 marks that anniversary. Ten years of building a platform, refining a vision, and quietly crowning delegate after delegate under her tutelage. In my eyes, she is as much a titleholder tonight as Bernella is. This crown didn’t happen in a vacuum; it happened because a woman spent ten years making sure Saint Lucia’s delegates walked into any room, anywhere, fully ready. That is its own kind of crown, and Mederick has worn it, unbothered and unwavering, for a decade.

The Woman Behind the Sash

Here is what I find most compelling about Bernella: she did not arrive polished by proximity to fame or fashion. She arrived polished by work. By day — and often by night — she is a World of Hyatt Supervisor in Front Office and Concierge Operations, the kind of role that demands warmth on command, discretion under pressure, and an instinct for making every single person in front of you feel like the only one who matters. That is not a soft skill. That is a superpower, and it happens to be excellent training for a crown.

Velinor herself put it plainly, and I haven’t stopped thinking about the line since: “Tourism is the main contributor to Saint Lucia’s economy, so I take my role very seriously. I truly believe that my upbringing prepared me for this field.” There is no artifice in that sentence. It reads like a woman who understands exactly what she is being asked to carry — and has already been carrying it, quietly, for years.

That is, to me, the whole story. Not a beauty queen borrowing gravity from a title, but a professional who has already been doing the work of hospitality, of representation, of making the island shine one guest interaction at a time — now handed a global stage to do it at scale.

An Island Effort, Front to Back

No crowning happens in isolation, and this one carried the unmistakable fingerprint of Saint Lucia showing up for its own. Official Host Hotel Secrets Resorts anchored the season in signature island luxury, while the Office of the Prime Minister lent the full weight of national pride to the proceedings. Colombian Emeralds, IBS Solutions, True Value, and Harris Paints rounded out a sponsor roster that reads like a love letter to Saint Lucian enterprise — proof that when this island backs someone, it backs them completely.

I’ll close the way I always do when St. Lucia hands me something worth saying out loud: with total, unbothered bias. I didn’t host this one. I didn’t need to. From the audience, in the dark, watching a Concierge Supervisor become a Miss Universe delegate in real time — I saw a crown find exactly the right head.

Wear it beautifully, Bernella. The island is behind you. So am I. And as she now sets her sights on the 75th Diamond Edition of Miss Universe, the world is about to see exactly what Saint Lucia has known all along.
