The Ministry of Natural resources through the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) are launching a probe into the incident which occurred on the 30th of August 2026.
This is according to an official statement released by TANAPA shortly after the accident, a dispatch which also issued stern warning against reckless driving by local tour guides in Serengeti.
The accident involved a beige colored, specially fitted Toyota Landcruiser Safari truck with registration number T-377 BJE belonging to the Nature Responsible Safari Company, which was carrying four Swiss tourists plus their Tanzanian driver.
The driver behind the wheel of the safari truck was Ramadhan Miraji Mbaga, an employee of Nature Responsible Safari Company of Arusha who reportedly failed to control the runaway vehicle as it plunged head-on into the big river filled with all types of ferocious reptiles.
The four foreign visitors, from Switzerland escaped by sheer luck as their truck pitched over the gorge and rolled into the raging crocodile infested river below.
Some of them somehow managed to jump through the windows, as the Toyota Landcruiser Safari truck accelerated head-on into River Mara, with five people on board, including the driver.
Apparently, by the time the safari truck hit the waters of Mara, most of the passengers had already jumped out of the vehicle, with the exception of the driver and one other person who were however rescued in time before the giant Nile Crocodiles reached the scene.
This was the first ever incident of a safari vehicle falling into River Mara and various stakeholders therefore called for a thorough probe into the matter.
The truck was among the various vehicles scrambling to get a better view of the thousands of wildebeests and Zebras making up the annual Serengeti Migration which at that time was crossing river Mara at the Northern Kogatende section of the Tanzanian Park.
Apparently, what promised to be an adventurous safari went wrong at the Tabora B’ area where hundreds of tourists gather to watch the annual Serengeti Migration cross the large trunk river which cuts across the park flowing from Kenya and heading towards Lake Victoria.
Serengeti, which is the most popular attraction in East Africa, receives more than 480,000 tourists per year with the migration being the highlight of their tours.
During the migration crossing at River Mara, tour drivers have been reported to rally against each other in their quest to get better views of the wildebeests’ movements at the water body.
It is being suspected that during such helter-skelter rush at Kogatende, the vehicle carrying Swiss tourists fell into River Mara.
