Rahul Gandhi’s convoy meets with accident in UP, Congress leader unhurt

Some vehicles in Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s convoy met with an accident on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh at around 10.15 am on Monday while he was travelling from Lucknow to Sultanpur for a court hearing in a defamation case, PTI reported. Gandhi was unhurt.

Sultanpur Superintendent of Police Vineet Jaiswal said no one was injured, The Indian Express reported.

Media reports had initially said that several persons were injured.

Gandhi was travelling to Sultanpur to appear before a special MP-MLA court in connection with a 2018 defamation case for his remarks about Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He has been acquitted in the matter.

The incident occurred when a private vehicle at the front of the convoy, reportedly belonging to a Congress leader, applied the brakes suddenly for an unspecified reason, causing vehicles behind it to collide, a police officer told PTI.

The vehicles involved had joined the convoy midway. Congress workers from neighbouring districts were travelling in them.

The Uttar Pradesh Police has formed a special investigation team to investigate what led to the accident and determine whether there were any lapses in security, escort arrangements or traffic management, PTI reported.

The team has been directed to investigate all aspects of the incident and submit a detailed report to police headquarters at the earliest.
