Racing world mourns Marcel Angel after fatal incident at Cape Town’s Killarney Raceway

Cape Town – Veteran racing driver Marcel Angel has died following an incident during a race at Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town.

Motorsport South Africa confirmed that the 62-year-old died on Saturday, 19 September, while competing in Race 1 of the Extreme SuperCars category during the National Extreme Festival.

The circumstances surrounding the incident have not been disclosed.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Marcel Angel, following an incident during Race 1 of the Extreme SuperCars Driven by Dunlop at Killarney International Raceway today,” organisers said.

Motorsport South Africa said: “Marcel was competing in the Extreme SuperCars category.”

The governing body added: “Motorsport South Africa extends its sincere condolences to Marcel’s family, friends, fellow competitors and everyone who knew him.”

The remainder of Saturday’s racing programme was cancelled following his death.

Angel was a veteran of South African motorsport and a multiple championship winner who competed across several disciplines.
