This is why Ramaphosa extended the Madlanga Commission deadline

Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has granted the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry a further extension, giving it until 25 January 2027 to submit its final report.

The extension will allow the commission to process additional evidence, including testimony from experts who have made recommendations relevant to its terms of reference, according to the Presidency.

The latest deadline replaces the previous 16 November 2026 reporting date. The commission was established to investigate allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system.

The Presidency said the additional time would allow the commission to consider the new evidence before finalising its findings.

“The new deadline allows the Commission to process additional evidence, including the testimony of various experts who have made recommendations relating to the Commission’s terms of reference,” it said.

Serious criminality

The extension comes as the commission continues its hearings, having recently turned its attention to allegations involving the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), including alleged infiltration by criminal networks and collusion between officers and criminal syndicates, according to SABC News.

Speaking after the commission reached its one-year mark, chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga said: “Unfortunately, what is emerging from the evidence is that there are indications of serious criminality within the criminal justice system.”

He added that the evidence pointed to “the infiltration of, and undue influence on, the criminal justice system by elements of criminality.”

The commission began public hearings in September 2025 and has already received testimony relating to alleged corruption and political interference in law enforcement.
