Lowfeye has opened up about the deeply personal story behind his latest album, Nosange, revealing that the project was never simply another release. Instead, it became a heartfelt tribute to his late mother, whose influence continues to shape both his life and his music.

Speaking during an appearance on Culture’s Biggest Podcast, the rapper reflected on the uncertain period following the release of his mixtape. While he knew another project was coming, he admitted that he initially had no clear direction for what it would be called.

“The idea came after I released the mixtape,” he explained. “At first, I wasn’t sure what I was going to call the album. I kept asking myself, ‘What am I going to name it?’ But I knew I wanted to do something in my mother’s name because that’s where I believe I got this talent from, and also the drive that first got me here.”

For Lowfeye, the album’s title carries far more than sentimental value. It represents the woman he believes passed down both his musical gift and the determination that pushed him to pursue his dreams.

He revealed that his mother had been a musician herself, a fact that has continued to inspire his own journey. Looking back, he now sees that music had always been part of who he was.

“I always say this in interviews: I was inspired by the fact that she used to be a musician as well. That made me feel like, ‘Yo, I want to do this for her too.’ Looking back now, I realise I’ve always loved music, even before I came to that realisation.”

Beyond honouring his mother’s legacy, Nosange also became a space where Lowfeye confronted years of emotional pain. He described the album as an important chapter in his personal growth, explaining that he could not move forward without first addressing the burdens he had been carrying.

“At the same time, I felt like there were a lot of things I had been carrying emotionally. Before I could truly continue my journey and move forward, I had to address those things and fully heal from them.”

The rapper also revealed that Nosange is closely connected to his earlier project, Umphana Makulu. Rather than beginning a new story, he sees the album as a continuation of themes and experiences that listeners may have already encountered in his previous work.

“I touched on some of those experiences in Umphana Makulu, and if you listen closely, you’ll find a correlation between that project and this album. So Nosange is, in a way, a continuation of that story.”

Throughout the conversation, it became clear that Nosange is one of Lowfeye’s most intimate releases yet. The interviewer praised the project’s emotional depth, noting that many of its standout tracks rank among the artist’s most heartfelt songs to date.
