Uganda’s emerging Rugby Cranes 7s put up a dominant display to lift the men’s and women’s inaugural Burundi 7s titles.
The Cranes overcame adversity at the Tanzania-Burundi border to go on and dismantle the hosts, Burundi, Tanzania and DRC (Bukavu) team.
On Friday, July 3, the Uganda Rugby President, Godwin Kayangwe, took to his X platform to air out his displeasure at how the Tanzanian officials had handled the situation, in what he described as ‘prolonged, unprofessional, and distressing treatment by authorities along the border crossing.’
Nonetheless, the Emerging Cranes coached by Edmond Quaresma and Isaac Massangazira for the women and men, respectively, showed up big, with Unity Namulala and Ivan Bulima emerging as the tournament’s Most Valuable Players.
On the local scene at the Busiro 7s, the Uganda 7s Academy won the overall title, only losing one game and conceding two tries throughout the 10-team tournament.
These preparations put the Uganda Men in a good position to compete at the Rugby Africa 7s, whose new date is yet to be announced, while the Lady Cranes are easing in some new players into the program ahead of the Rugby Africa Women’ s 7s later this year in November.
