International News: Spain battles to contain one of its largest-ever wildfires

By Zoila Palma:  Spanish firefighters are battling one of the country’s largest wildfires in recent history, with a blaze in Guadalajara province having burned approximately 32,000 hectares of land over nearly a week.

The fire, located northeast of Madrid, has prompted a major emergency response as authorities work to contain the flames before stronger winds forecast for Thursday potentially worsen conditions.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Castilla-La Mancha regional President Emiliano García-Page met with emergency commanders on Wednesday to assess the firefighting operation. García-Page later expressed “cautious optimism,” saying progress on the ground offered hope that the situation could be stabilized in the coming days.

Improving conditions have allowed residents of five previously evacuated communities to return home, while authorities said people from La Mierla, where the fire began about 70 kilometres northeast of Madrid, could also be permitted to return soon.

Since the blaze erupted last Thursday, 34 communities have been evacuated and around 1,200 people moved to safety.
