International News: Migrant caravan departs Honduras enroute to U.S.

By Zoila Palma:  A migrant caravan that departed San Pedro Sula, Honduras, on September 20 is continuing its journey north through Mexico toward the U.S. southern border, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The group, known as “Fe y Esperanza,” or “Faith and Hope,” had grown to more than 600 migrants by Monday.

The caravan initially consisted of between 200 and 400 Honduran migrants who traveled in small groups toward Guatemala, according to the Spanish news agency EFE.

By September 28, the group had resumed its journey from Tapachula, southern Mexico, toward Mexico’s northern border with the United States. The migrants include people from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador and Haiti.

DHS said U.S. Border Patrol is closely coordinating with international partners to monitor the caravan’s movements. The group remains hundreds of miles from the U.S. border, and it is unclear how many migrants will ultimately reach northern Mexico or attempt to enter the United States. Mexican authorities have previously intercepted and dispersed migrant caravans traveling north.
