Institute of Archaeology, partners launch Fire Management training at Caracol

By Zoila Palma:  The Institute of Archaeology has launched an important fire management training initiative at the Caracol Archaeological Reserve, aimed at strengthening the capacity of site rangers to identify fire risks, understand wildland fire behavior, and respond effectively to fire incidents.

The training began on September 15, 2026, as part of efforts to better protect the archaeological reserve and its surrounding natural environment.

The initiative brings together the Institute of Archaeology, the Belize Forest Department, Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD), and the Belize Defence Force. Through the collaborative effort, site rangers are being equipped with practical knowledge and skills to recognize potential fire threats and improve preparedness and response in the event of wildland fires.

The training focuses on building local expertise in fire management while promoting greater coordination among agencies responsible for protecting Belize’s forests, wildlife, and cultural heritage. The Caracol Archaeological Reserve, located within the Maya Mountains, contains significant archaeological remains while also being surrounded by important forest ecosystems, making effective fire preparedness an important component of its protection.

The Institute of Archaeology said the effort represents a step toward strengthening fire preparedness not only at Caracol but potentially at other protected areas and archaeological reserves across Belize.
