By Zoila Palma: Haiti is on track to mark a decade without national elections after the country’s Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) indefinitely postponed the initial stages of the electoral process.
The decision suspends the first round of presidential and legislative elections that had been scheduled for December 13, 2026, with authorities yet to announce a new date or give specific reasons for the delay.
The CEP said the electoral campaign period has also been postponed, with new start and end dates to be announced as part of an updated electoral calendar.
The revised schedule is expected to be finalized in coordination with political groups authorized to participate in the elections, while the deadline for candidates to register and submit required documents has been extended to October 31.
Haiti has been facing a prolonged political, economic and security crisis, with gangs and other armed groups expanding their control in parts of the country. The deteriorating security situation has placed additional pressure on the government’s ability to organize elections and provide security at polling stations. The original electoral calendar had called for a runoff on February 21, 2027.
Haitians last voted in a national election in 2016, when Jovenel Moïse was elected president.
Following his assassination in 2021, Haiti has been governed by transitional authorities, and since 2023 the country has had no nationally elected officials serving in office.
