By Zoila Palma: A Haitian gang has released six children and seven women who were among more than 50 people kidnapped following a deadly attack near Port-au-Prince, UNICEF said Friday. Those freed include three children under age two, a 7-year-old and two teenage girls.
UNICEF said it worked with community leaders to secure their release, although it remains unclear whether additional women and children are still being held or whether those released require medical treatment.
UNICEF Deputy Representative in Haiti Yannig Dussart described the release as “a rare moment of hope” amid the ongoing violence.
The kidnapping followed a gang attack on Kenscoff, a farming community in the hills above Haiti’s capital, where at least 47 people were killed late Sunday.
Gang leader Izo 2 had reportedly threatened to execute hostages if police killed gang members during efforts to regain control of the area.
The attack has intensified calls for international action, with the U.N. Security Council urging stronger security support for Haiti.
