Education with a National Purpose

Positioning Higher Education as a Catalyst for National Development, Workforce Readiness, and Opportunity.

For more than two decades, Galen University has been developing an educational model shaped not simply by what happens inside the classroom, but by what Belize needs beyond it.

Located in the Cayo District in western Belize, the fully private tertiary institution has built its reputation around an increasingly important principle: education must be relevant. Through its Faculty of Education, Faculty of Business and Entrepreneurship, and Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology, Galen connects academic programs with workforce requirements, national development priorities and practical experience.

For Director of Marketing and Admissions Deanna Peyrefitte, that alignment is fundamental to the university’s identity.

“We’ve been at this for over 23 years, providing education and actually aligning our education with the national development needs,” says Peyrefitte.

Galen’s four core values—learner-centeredness, integrity, innovation and professionalism—provide the foundation. Yet perhaps the clearest demonstration of those principles can be found far beyond the university’s existing campus.

Taking Opportunity to the Learner

Provost Cynthia Eve Aird describes a university increasingly determined to meet students where they are, including those living in isolated rural communities where access to tertiary education can be difficult.

One initiative involves reaching students from a technical high school serving several Maya villages in Belize’s Toledo District. The community is remote, resources are limited, and continuing into higher education can be challenging because of distance and financial constraints.

Rather than expecting those students to overcome every obstacle independently, Galen is considering how it can bridge gaps in computer literacy, provide access to online education, and help secure the technology necessary for participation. The university is also looking at financial accessibility, including a 30 percent program discount for the first two years for the students involved.

“It’s not only helping them to have access to our program,” Aird explains. “But it’s how do we meet them where they are at and what do we do to help them become academically successful?”

That philosophy extends into student wellbeing. Counseling and support services form part of an environment designed to recognize the learner as an individual rather than simply an enrolment number.

For Peyrefitte, the flexibility of Galen’s educational delivery creates an opportunity to reach communities across the country.

“We’re looking to ensure that we’re reaching our people, but also that the programs that we’re taking are catering to the needs of the country,” says Peyrefitte.

Where Education Meets Industry

That connection to national needs is particularly visible through Galen’s relationships with Belize’s business community, government agencies, professional organizations and development institutions.

Its network includes the Chamber of Commerce, Belize Tourism Industry Association, Belize Tourism Board, BELTRAIDE, government ministries, accounting organizations and international and diplomatic partners. Relationships also extend into environmental conservation, cultural heritage, law enforcement and other sectors.

“We’ve sent our vines far and wide,” Peyrefitte says. “We do have a lot of alumni and existing students who work in key positions in the country.”

Those relationships have practical consequences for students. Many Galen programs incorporate internships, placing learners directly into professional environments and allowing employers to evaluate emerging talent.

The university’s accounting program provides a strong example. Students without previous professional accounting experience are expected to complete internships rather than substitute workplace experience with an academic capstone. Galen’s relationships with auditing firms have resulted in students securing employment before graduation, while firms have also approached the university for student assistance during particularly demanding periods.

Aird sees that practical connection as critical.

“They bring their professional experience, and they’re sharing it with our students and enriching what they’re doing in the classroom,” she says of industry professionals who return to Galen as adjunct faculty.

The cycle is powerful: students become graduates, graduates move into important positions throughout Belize, and some ultimately return to Galen to help prepare the next generation.

A University Connected to Its Country

Galen’s reach extends well beyond conventional business disciplines.

Its anthropology program is creating new pathways connected to Belize’s cultural and archaeological heritage. The university has been asked to develop a certificate in heritage management that could strengthen the knowledge of park rangers and tourism professionals responsible for interpreting and protecting some of Belize’s most important natural and cultural assets.

“There’s a challenge to balance tourism while maintaining and protecting our cultural heritage,” Aird says.

Galen also maintains relationships across biodiversity and conservation organizations, while its criminal justice program connects with law enforcement, defence and the prison system, including work relating to rehabilitation and recidivism.

“We really are well networked, and we do a lot of outreach and making our programs relevant and real,” Peyrefitte says.

That same philosophy informs the university’s role in education, economic development and emerging national priorities. Rather than creating programs in isolation, Galen consults with the institutions and industries expected to employ its graduates.

Investing in the Next Galen

Growth is now creating another challenge: Galen is outgrowing its current approximately seven-acre location.

Investment since the pandemic has already expanded classroom and outdoor student space, while plans for additional recreational facilities are progressing. The university’s greater ambition, however, is the phased development of an entirely new campus roughly 10 minutes from its existing location.

The first phase is expected to incorporate classrooms, student accommodation, a cafeteria, university farm and supporting offices.

The location itself provides an extraordinary connection between Galen’s future and Belize’s past. Situated within the Baking Pot Archaeological Reserve, the property contains the remains of ancient Maya structures. Those areas are being preserved while providing field archaeology opportunities for Galen students and visiting university students from North America.

“We do have plans to develop an entire new campus for Galen University, which will be in three phases,” says Aird.

Part of that investment will support one of Galen’s most significant academic expansions: plans for a School of Public Health and Allied Sciences.

Preparing for Tomorrow’s Workforce

Nursing is expected to become a major component of the new academic direction. Galen is working with external expertise to develop a program aligned with Belizean and Caribbean nursing standards, while also considering European requirements.

The intention is to prepare graduates for a profession facing shortages across multiple international markets while ensuring they have the skills to serve Belize and the wider Caribbean.

Other areas of development reflect equally pressing national priorities. A bachelor’s degree in vocational technical education has already been developed and is awaiting approval, while Galen plans to introduce climate-smart agriculture beginning with an associate degree and micro-credentials.

Its future university farm is expected to become a practical teaching environment supporting agriculture and animal health education while advancing wider conversations around climate resilience and food security.

“We have to become more independent and more resilient as a country and as a people,” Aird says.

The Faculty of Business and Entrepreneurship is meanwhile exploring additional micro-credentials responsive to public and private-sector requirements. These shorter learning opportunities are particularly important for working professionals seeking to upgrade skills without necessarily pursuing another full degree.

“Micro-credentialing and the certificate courses as well, it’s something that we are keenly looking at,” Peyrefitte says. “It’s a way to upskill our working population as well and workforce.”

Closing the Skills Gap

Conversations about Belize’s changing economy are also shaping Galen’s future direction.

Private-sector organizations in areas such as manufacturing have identified gaps between the technical capabilities required by modern industry and the skills currently available in the workforce.

For Galen, addressing that challenge does not mean attempting to build every facility independently. Partnerships with institutions inside and outside Belize can provide access to specialist laboratories, equipment and expertise while avoiding unnecessary duplication.

“Strategic alliances really are what we’re doing,” Peyrefitte says. “Not duplicating efforts.”

It is an approach consistent with the university’s broader philosophy: understand what the country needs, identify where Galen can make the greatest contribution and collaborate where partnership produces a stronger result.

Evolving for the Future

As Galen moves toward 2027, physical expansion will be accompanied by internal transformation.

The university is progressing through a strategic planning exercise while prioritizing faculty and staff development, institutional restructuring and stronger student support. At the same time, rapidly evolving artificial intelligence and online learning technologies are changing expectations throughout higher education.

“As artificial intelligence and online learning and teaching and learning evolve, we also have to evolve and be able to address those needs,” Aird says.

Yet technology is only one component of the university’s future. Galen’s larger ambition remains deeply human: extending opportunity into communities that have historically found higher education difficult to access, preparing graduates for meaningful employment and creating programs capable of supporting Belize’s long-term development.

Whether that means helping a rural student learn to navigate an online classroom, preparing an accounting graduate for an auditing firm, protecting Belize’s cultural heritage, developing climate-resilient agriculture or addressing future healthcare and technical workforce needs, Galen is building education around application and purpose.

After more than 23 years, its next chapter is therefore not simply about becoming a larger university. It is about extending the reach and relevance of what Galen already believes education should accomplish.

“We really are looking to ensure that we’re reaching our people,” Peyrefitte says.

For Galen University, that commitment offers a clear direction forward: grow where Belize needs growth, teach where skills are needed most, and ensure that opportunity reaches far beyond the boundaries of a campus.
