By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize Electricity Limited says temporary generation capacity currently being installed at the Westlake Facility is expected to begin operations by mid-September for an initial six month period.
The company issued an update following two major outages in the past week.
On August 25, available in country generation stood at approximately 103 megawatts while evening demand reached 122 megawatts. On August 31, generation was approximately 109 megawatts against demand of 117 megawatts.
On both occasions, the temporary loss of supply from Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad, at a time when local generation was already below demand, resulted in loss of power to the national grid.
BEL says available generation continues to be influenced by seasonal conditions, scheduled maintenance and reduced output from some facilities.
The company advised in October 2025 of a potential shortfall in 2026, after which Cabinet declared an emergency under the PUC Request for Proposal Regulations, enabling procurement of the temporary capacity.
BEL warned that controlled interruptions or load shedding may still be required to maintain grid stability, particularly if a significant source of supply is unexpectedly lost.
