Ethiopia, UN Peace Operations Office Seek Stronger Coordination for Horn Stability

Addis Ababa, September 25, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia and the United Nations have underscored the importance of closer coordination and engagement to advance peace and stability in the Horn of Africa, during a meeting on the margins of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

Minister Adviser for East African Affairs Getachew Reda held talks with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, focusing on strengthening coordination and engagement in support of peace and stability across the Horn.

The discussion highlighted the importance of sustained cooperation between Ethiopia and the United Nations as regional actors work to advance peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

Under-Secretary-General Lacroix commended Ethiopia for its continued contribution to international peacekeeping efforts, particularly its role in South Sudan. Ethiopia has a longstanding record of participation in UN-authorized peacekeeping operations, with Ethiopian peacekeepers serving in several missions.

The engagement took place as part of Ethiopia’s diplomatic participation in UNGA 81, where the country is pursuing discussions on regional peace, cooperation and broader international partnerships.
