Bududa students ‘rescue’ headteacher from State House anti-corruption arrest

Students at Bududa Senior Secondary School on Thursday blocked the arrest of their headteacher, Nasibu Mutyaba, by officials from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and police.

Mutyaba’s intended arrest was reportedly ordered by Local Government minister Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi over allegations that the school was charging students fees despite being a government-aided institution.

Students reportedly demonstrated and surrounded the officials, demanding to know where they were taking their headteacher before pulling him away.

It is alleged that each student at Bududa Senior Secondary School pays Shs 150,000 in school fees. Barugahara said such charges were not permitted in government-aided schools, arguing that the government’s free education policy was introduced to enable children from poor families to access education.

The anti-corruption officials and police officers were reportedly overwhelmed by the number of students who gathered at the scene, forcing them to abandon the arrest.

It was not immediately clear whether police would return to arrest Mutyaba.

Barugahara is in Bududa as part of his campaign to expose alleged corruption and mismanagement in the district. So far, seven district officials have reportedly been arrested during the minister’s tour.

Those arrested include David Muwoya Wekhoola, the acting district education officer; Beatrice Wakooli, the district community development officer; Hashim Wafula, the district commercial officer; Grace Nabutasale, the district internal auditor; Naume Muganwa, the district inspector of schools; Bernard Madoi, assistant resident district commissioner; and Hassan Mangobe, also an assistant RDC.
