Zig-Zag Open tourney set for Post 3

OHAMBO JATATE – Zig-Zag Printing Open tournament called Summer Cup 2026, comprising football and netball teams, will kick off this Saturday at Epukiro sports ground in the Omaheke region. 

The competition, in its second edition, is aimed at keeping the youth busy and showcase their talent in the Epukiro constituency. 

Competition organiser Uavirura Sikisa Muariani shared with New Era Sport that the tournament, worth prize money, will be determined by the number of participating clubs.

“The football teams will register at N$800, while the netball teams will register at N$350. We are struggling with sponsorship here, but we can’t give up on developing sport in our area,” he said.

Muariani added that more than 10 football teams had confirmed their participation, while six netball teams had booked their places in the tournament. 

“We have teams like Omaueuozonjanda FC, Ovinjuru, Kalkpan, Young Destroyer from Farm du Plessis, Okovimburu, Krymekaar, Eastern Swallows and Pos 3’s Tom and Jerry. It will be a fierce battle here this weekend,” he said.

He added that he is still receiving calls from many teams interested in the competition. 

Thus, he said, the draw will be made early Saturday morning, when all teams arrive at Post 3. 

It will be played in a knockout format in the football category, while netball will be determined by the number of participating teams.

Omaueuozonjanda FC, better known as ‘Omuhanuua’, are the defending football champions.

The Okasongo netball team won the previous edition of the tournament. 

Meanwhile, Jeree Kanguatjivi, Ozonjanda FC head coach, said his team is ready to defend the Zig-Zag Summer Cup.

 He added that his players have been training hard for the tournament. 

“This is our cup, and we will make sure it remains in our trophy cabinet. We are based in Post 3. It will be tough for other teams to take this trophy from us. We have strong support, as the competition is on our home ground,” he said.

Kanguatjivi added that his team has no injuries, and that the mood in the camp is positive. 

“We will leave no stone unturned against opponents. Glory is what we are fighting for,” he said.

Umue Nguvauva, the Kasongo netball captain, said the team is more than prepared for the tournament and hungry for victory. 

“We are the defending champions. All eyes are on us, and we will keep our heads up and reach our goal, which is to retain the Cup. It’s not going to be easy, but we are confident we will do well,” she said.

Nguvauva added that the atmosphere at the camp is superb and that all players are determined to make history by winning the competition for the second time.

The competition is expected to end on Sunday.
