Black cheerleaders from Sand Creek High School in Colorado Springs, claimed they were racially harassed, bullied and intimidated by white students at Lutheran High School while visiting for a football game on Sept. 24. Now the students and their families are calling for accountability, demanding disciplinary action.

Black Sand Creek High School cheerleaders claim they were told to “go back to where” they came from and were intimidated by white students at Lutheran High School.

In an interview with CBS News published Oct. 6, Sand Creek High School cheerleader Serenity Lewis alleged that students from Lutheran High School shouted disparaging remarks, including “go back to where you came from,” and taunted her and other Black members of the squad while taking videos and photos of them as they entered the game.

“I walked in, and we were passing the bleachers, and a student made a statement saying that I don’t belong there and to go to my side,” Millani Jeeter, another member from the Sand Creek High School cheerleading team, alleged in an interview with CBS News published Tuesday. “He then made a statement calling me Harriet Tubman.”

The girls informed their coach Sanaa Ford of the alarming behavior from Luther High School students. Ford said she had witnessed something similar — an incident in which white male students from the school allegedly whipped belts at the Black Sand Creek cheerleaders. The cheerleaders allege they were subjected to racist remarks and blocked from passing through the Lutheran High School student section during the game in Parker. They also claim students attempted to prevent them from moving through the crowd.

“You’re whipping your belt, and you won’t let us through the crowd. That’s a threat,” said Ford, an assistant cheerleading coach at Sand Creek High School. “I ended up taking a picture of the boys.”

“I was in disbelief. I was like, that’s not okay,” Lewis added.

Ford and the girls informed Lutheran’s executive director of the students’ bad behavior, but claimed he didn’t take their concerns seriously.

“I feel like he wanted to sweep it under the rug,” Ford said.

Jeeter claimed that she felt unwelcomed and uncomfortable when she used the bathroom during the game. A white woman waiting in line appeared reluctant to use the same stall after her.

“She kind of just looked at me a little confused and disgusted and didn’t use the bathroom after me. She waited for one of my fellow cheerleaders to come out, who happens to be a Caucasian girl,” said Jeeter.

The cheerleaders also allege that a Black male student had his hair touched by students in the Lutheran section as the group walked past on their way back from the concession stand.

Due to the appalling behavior, the cheerleaders decided to leave the game early — but the behavior only intensified, they alleged. As they exited, they said, students made monkey noises at them.
