BEL says Westlake emergency generation helped prevent load shedding

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize Electricity Limited says its temporary generation facility at Westlake is already helping to support the national electricity system as testing and commissioning of new emergency generation units continue.

According to BEL, the Westlake facility is currently operating at approximately 40 percent of its planned capacity.

The company says the additional local generation has provided greater flexibility in meeting Belize’s electricity demand, particularly when imported electricity from Mexico is unavailable.

BEL reported that during periods over the past two days when electricity supply from Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad was unavailable, generation from Westlake helped sustain the system and avoid load shedding during those periods.

Testing and commissioning will continue as additional generating units are brought online.

Once the facility is fully commissioned, Westlake is expected to provide 20 megawatts of emergency generation capacity.

BEL says the additional capacity will provide support when other sources of electricity supply are interrupted.

The company thanked customers for their patience as work continues to strengthen the reliability of Belize’s electricity supply.
