French oil giant finds new oil in Angola, secures stakes in 2 new exploration blocks
French energy giant TotalEnergies has announced a new oil discovery in Angola and signed agreements to acquire a 40% operated interest in two additional exploration blocks as it expands its operations in the country.

French energy giant TotalEnergies has announced a new oil discovery in Angola and signed agreements to acquire a 40% operated interest in two additional exploration blocks as it expands its operations in the country.
- TotalEnergies has made a significant oil discovery in Angola's Block 17, named Acacia-5, set to boost production by 6,000 barrels per day starting just three months after its June 2026 find.
- This is the company's second major success in 2026, following a notable discovery in the Lower Congo Basin's Block 0, strengthening its upstream portfolio in Angola.
- The French energy giant signed agreements to acquire a 40% operated interest in exploration Blocks 17/25 and 32/21, further expanding its stake in the prolific Lower Congo Basin region.
- These blocks benefit from extensive seismic data and proximity to existing FPSOs, allowing for efficient future development and tiebacks to TotalEnergies’ infrastructure.
The company said the new Acacia-5 discovery will add about 6,000 barrels of oil per day to production from its Block 17. TotalEnergies expects the fast-track development to begin producing within three months of the discovery, which was made in June 2026.
First Oil will be achieved only three months after the discovery made in June 2026, through a fast-track development leveraging the available capacity on the Pazflor FPSO.
Acacia-5 is the second exploration success recorded in 2026 across TotalEnergies' Angolan portfolio, following the recent Block 0 discovery in the prolific Lower Congo Basin, where TotalEnergies holds a 10% interest alongside Chevron.

TotalEnergies expands Angola exploration
TotalEnergies has also signed agreements with Angola’s petroleum regulator, Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis (ANPG), to enter exploration Blocks 17/25 and 32/21 in the Lower Congo Basin.
The French oil major will hold a 40% operated interest in both blocks, strengthening its position in one of Angola’s key oil-producing regions.
The blocks are covered by extensive existing 3D seismic data and offer access to several prospective geological plays. Their proximity to existing infrastructure in TotalEnergies-operated Blocks 17 and 32, where six FPSOs are currently producing, could enable future tie-backs and lower-cost development of additional resources using existing facilities.
The move comes as TotalEnergies increases its investment in Angola. CEO Patrick Pouyanné said the company and its partners plan to invest $10 billion in the country over the next five years.

Angola remains key to TotalEnergies
The discovery and exploration agreements reflect TotalEnergies’ continued focus on Angola as it seeks to grow oil production and develop new resources.
TotalEnergies has operated in Angola since 1953, making the country one of its key contributors to hydrocarbon production. The company produced 156,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) in Angola in 2025.
Its portfolio in the country includes deep offshore operated assets, which account for about 45% of Angola’s oil production, service stations operated in partnership with Sonangol, and renewable energy projects.
This makes TotalEnergies a major player in Angola’s energy sector as the country seeks to sustain oil production while advancing its energy transition.
