‘Ah tired ah jail, tired ah di hole’: Accused burglar tries to change plea to guilty to get out early but still in jail because he still says he didn’t do it

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man who told the court he wanted to plead guilty because he was tired of being in prison had his plea rejected after insisting that he never burglarized the property in question.

Earl Sanchez, 45, of the Morning Glory Street area, appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday on a charge of burglary.

Sanchez has been on remand since October 2025 after being unable to meet bail of $3,000 plus one surety in the same amount.

During Friday’s appearance, Sanchez told the court that the pressure of being incarcerated, including time spent in the “hole,” had taken a toll on him and asked to change his plea from not guilty to guilty.

“I wah change meh plea to guilty. Ah tired ah jail,” Sanchez told the court.

The prosecution’s allegations were then read to him. Police allege that at around 10:30 p.m. on October 27, 2025, Sanchez entered a home through an open metal door and stole a bicycle valued at $350, a black and orange pump valued at $35 and a Bluetooth speaker valued at $50.

After hearing the allegations, however, Sanchez told the court, “I neva burglarized deh place,” while reportedly admitting that he stole the bicycle.

Senior Magistrate Dennison explained that the court could not accept a guilty plea simply because Sanchez wanted to get the matter over with if he was not admitting to committing the offence. His proposed guilty plea was therefore treated as equivocal and a not guilty plea was maintained.

Sanchez remains eligible for bail but has so far been unable to meet the $3,000 bail requirement. His bail conditions include staying at least 100 yards away from the complainant and not interfering with the complainant.

Unable to post bail on Friday, Sanchez was further remanded to the Belize Central Prison until November 23, 2026, when his case is scheduled for trial.
