Whitecaps extend club’s best start ahead of Canadian Championship semifinal

KANSAS CITY, KS – Vancouver Whitecaps FC continued their reign at the top of the MLS Western Conference with a thorough 3-0 victory against Sporting Kansas City at Sporting Park on Saturday.

Thomas Müller got the party started with a first-half penalty kick. Brian White and Rayan Elloumi added second half strikes to ensure that Whitecaps FC (13W-4D-4L, 43 points) stayed in first place in the West.

It was also a special night for ‘Caps goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka, who notched his 46th clean sheet to set a new MLS era club-record.

At the quarter-hour, Whitecaps FC were denied by a narrow margin. Müller spotted striker White at the edge of the area. White drew two defenders close before he laid it off with a cheeky backheel flick to Édier Ocampo. The Colombian then sent a low drive towards goal, but the ball caromed off the far post.

Whitecaps FC’s persistence in the attacking third paid off in the 38th minute. Off a Ryan Gauld set-up, Bruno Caicedo made a hard juke in the middle of the box on SKC defender Justin Reynolds, who tripped up the 21-year-old Ecuadorian international. 

Referee Marcos de Oliveira pointed to the spot. Müller slotted it past goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland for 1-0. Since he joined Whitecaps FC a year ago, der Raumdeuter has been a remarkable 10-for-10 from the spot across all competitions.

In first-half stoppage time, centre back Tristan Blackmon found Caicedo down the left wing. A hard cut inside led to a flash across goal for White, who nodded the cross just wide of a second goal.

After play resumed, Gauld sent a sublime through ball for Caicedo, who outran defenders to slip a goal-line cross towards White.

While the veteran striker barely missed the header, Larraz was first to the bouncing ball. His improvised half-volley back across the box gave White a pinpoint tap-in backheel for 2-0.

At the 90th minute, substitute striker Rayan Elloumi buried Müller’s deep cross to salt the match away.
