Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has declared that Egypt is prepared to assist in safeguarding Saudi Arabia, but established a strict boundary against taking part in offensive operations within Yemen.

  • President Sisi declared that Egypt will defend Saudi Arabia but will not participate in military operations inside Yemen.
  • Egypt reaffirmed its strategic commitment to Gulf allies, restricting its potential military role to strictly defensive actions.
  • Sisi clarified that Egyptian military involvement would only focus on protecting the kingdom's territory and not include attacks on Yemen.
  • These assurances were communicated during high-level meetings in Riyadh and via a personal letter from Sisi to King Salman.

As Iran-backed Houthi forces step up their attacks against the kingdom, Cairo has reaffirmed its strategic commitment to Gulf allies while keeping its military role strictly defensive.

Egypt promises defense for Saudi Arabia while ruling out military action in Yemen

According to the Egyptian presidency as reported by Reuters, President Sisi clarified that Egyptian military involvement "would be limited to defending the kingdom's territory and borders" and explicitly confirmed that Cairo's support "would not include an attack on Yemen".

Sisi further emphasized that while Egypt remains ready to defend regional partners if asked, its military actions "would not extend beyond Egyptian territory or that of an Arab state whose security and stability Cairo was seeking to protect".

This position was communicated during high-level meetings in Riyadh, where Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and intelligence chief Hassan Rashad met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Foreign Minister Abdelatty handed over a personal letter from President Sisi to King Salman, which Egypt's foreign ministry stated "affirmed Egypt's full solidarity with and support for Saudi Arabia".

Meanwhile, lawmakers in Cairo delayed a parliamentary vote until October 26 regarding formal authorization for troop deployment.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia maintain longstanding economic and security bonds, with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations supplying billions of dollars in aid, central bank deposits, and investment to Egypt over the last decade.

As reported by Reuters, Egypt "previously joined the Saudi-led coalition that intervened in Yemen in 2015 in support of the government against the Houthis, though it played a limited combat role in the civil war."
