‘Abuse of power’: Majodina under fire over disabled resident clash

Gqeberha – Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina has come under fire after a video emerged appearing to show her insulting a disabled resident during a heated community meeting in Loerie, Eastern Cape.

The confrontation reportedly erupted after the resident was escorted from the venue for allegedly disrupting the meeting. Kouga Municipality administrator Kyle Minnaar accused Majodina of chasing the man out and calling him “jou ma se p*es”.

Minnaar said the incident was particularly concerning because Majodina was attending the gathering in her capacity as a Cabinet minister.

“This is an abuse of power, completely disrespectful to residents, and totally unacceptable behaviour from a Cabinet minister,” he said.

Speaking to eNCA, Minnaar said the resident had been disagreeing with another person during the question-and-answer session before Majodina ordered his removal.

“Whilst he was walking out of the hall, she passed the insult,” he said.

Minnaar acknowledged that the resident may have been “guilty of speaking out of turn”, but said this did not justify the minister’s response.

“It’s disappointing to see a minister act in such a fashion, disrespecting a member of the community but also the entire community,” he said.

The incident has sparked divided reactions online, with some condemning Majodina while others defended her response.

The confrontation overshadowed a public meeting held after the launch of a R5.98 million upgrade to the Loerie Sewer Pump Station and rising main, aimed at addressing recurring infrastructure failures in the area.
