WASHINGTON — Reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were turned away from the White House on Saturday after President Donald Trump announced that the three news organizations were banned over coverage he described as “fake news.”
The action moved the dispute from a presidential announcement Friday to an enforced access restriction. Journalists from all three organizations said their permanent White House credentials had been disabled or confiscated when they attempted to enter the grounds Saturday morning, according to The Associated Press and Reuters.
Trump announced the ban on social media Friday, accusing the outlets of repeatedly publishing false or dishonest coverage. Asked later why he was taking the action, he said his objections reflected what he considered a cumulative pattern over the past two years. He also suggested that other news organizations could face similar restrictions.
The targeted outlets rejected the president’s characterization of their work and pledged to continue covering the administration. CNN called the restriction an assault on a constitutionally protected right. Politico said it would defend its First Amendment rights, while MS NOW said it would take steps necessary to protect independent journalism.
The White House Correspondents’ Association also criticized the decision. Its president, Fox News reporter Jacqui Heinrich, said constitutional protection for press freedom does not depend on whether a president approves of a news organization’s reporting or questions.
Legal experts told news organizations that the ban could face a court challenge because it appears to punish outlets based on their coverage. The First Amendment protects freedom of speech and the press, although courts have continued to consider how those protections apply to access within restricted presidential spaces.
The administration has clashed with news organizations before. In 2025, the White House restricted The Associated Press after the outlet declined to adopt the administration’s preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico. During Trump’s first term, a federal judge ordered the restoration of CNN correspondent Jim Acosta’s White House credential after it was revoked.
The latest restriction has implications beyond the three companies involved. White House reporters question the president, observe official events and provide information that reaches communities across the country. Limiting access based on disputed coverage could reduce the range of independent reporting available to the public and set a precedent for future administrations.
As of Saturday, no court had ruled on the new ban. The three organizations said they intend to keep reporting on the White House despite losing physical access to the grounds.
