By Breaking Belize News Staff: Two Belize City men have pleaded not guilty to loitering after police accused them of remaining on Freetown Road despite being instructed to move along.

Roman Riverol, a security guard, and BTL software specialist Eli Elezor Obando appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where they were jointly charged with loitering in a public place.

Police allege the men were on Freetown Road and failed to move quietly along when instructed to do so by separate police officers.

Both men challenged the allegation.

Riverol told the court he was not simply hanging around the area but was working undercover security for a Chinese businessman whose store had reportedly been affected by increased criminal activity.

He said he was deliberately not wearing a security uniform so he would not easily be identified as the person guarding the establishment. Riverol claimed he explained the situation to police, but officers did not accept his explanation.

Obando, meanwhile, told the court he had only been speaking with Riverol when police arrived. He said he initially left the area but later returned and was detained when police came back and found him there again.

Both men pleaded not guilty and were granted self-bail of $100 each.

They are due back in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on October 5, 2026.

The Magistrate reportedly warned both men of the consequences of failing to return to court, as self-bail is less commonly granted than bail secured through a surety.
