The U.S. Department of Education is investigating Saint Louis University School of Medicine for alleged racial discrimination in its admissions process.
The department’s Office for Civil Rights will determine whether the institution violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color or national origin. The department said in a statement that the inquiry is part of an effort to “advance President Trump’s mission to eliminate racial discrimination in medical school admissions processes.”
SLU officials say the university complies with all federal laws and intends to cooperate fully with the investigation.
“The university is proud of the outstanding students, alumni, and physicians that the SLU School of Medicine has educated over the past 190 years,” Clayton Berry, assistant vice president for communications, told St. Louis Public Radio. “The School’s commitment to excellence in education, research, patient care and service continues to exemplify the best of the university.”
SLU was one of five medical schools named in the investigation. The others are Dartmouth College’s Geisel School of Medicine, East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine, Western University of Health Sciences, and William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
