Reach A Hand Africa (RAHA) has donated medical equipment worth Shs137 million to 15 health facilities in Kasese and Bunyangabu districts, in a move aimed at improving maternal health and family planning services.

The donation, made under the U Decide Kasese-Bunyangabu (KB) Project, was officially handed over on June 25 at Kasese District Headquarters.

The equipment package includes examination couches, blood pressure machines, contraceptive cabinets, suction machines, manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) sets, motorcycles, and other essential medical supplies. RAHA also supported the renovation of family planning rooms at selected health facilities in the region.

The handover ceremony was attended by district leaders and health officials, including District Health Officer Dr. Bwambale Amon, Principal Chief Administrative Officer Mustafa Kikusa, Deputy LCV Chairperson Jeremiah Bwanandeke, and representatives of beneficiary health centres.

RAHA Chief Executive Officer Humphrey Nabimanya said the intervention is aimed at strengthening service delivery and reducing maternal mortality and morbidity.

“The donation is intended to improve access to quality family planning services and build on the progress already made by health facilities in the district,” Nabimanya said.

The support comes amid concerns over maternal and prenatal deaths in the region. According to recent media reports, at least 26 maternal deaths and 189 prenatal deaths were recorded between July and December 2025, largely attributed to blood shortages and delayed access to medication.

District officials welcomed the support but called for increased investment in underserved facilities.

“We appreciate the support from RAHA, but there is still need to extend assistance to more vulnerable health centres such as Ihandiro HC III and Kitholhu HC III,” district leaders said.

Health facility in-charges noted that the equipment will significantly improve service delivery, particularly in family planning, while urging proper maintenance and accountability.

The district authorities said the equipment will be integrated into the official inventory and subjected to routine maintenance to ensure sustainability.

Meanwhile, Tooro Kingdom representative Nicholas Mugume commended RAHA for its continued efforts in supporting youth access to essential health services.

He also highlighted ongoing youth empowerment initiatives by the kingdom, including the construction of a facility with an ICT hub, library, and poultry project aimed at enhancing skills development and economic opportunities.
