Police to investigate video showing tied dog being brutally beaten in Cotton Tree

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have launched an investigation after Breaking Belize News shared a disturbing video showing a tied dog being brutally beaten on social media.

The Belize Police Department has obtained a copy of the video and is working to confirm where the incident occurred. Preliminary information suggests that the incident took place in Cotton Tree Village, Cayo District.

Police said there was no justification for the actions depicted in the recording and that the matter was being treated seriously.

Investigators are seeking to identify the person seen assaulting the animal. Police indicated that a cruelty-to-animal charge could be pursued once the circumstances and identity of the alleged offender are established.

Public reports accompanying the video allege that the dog was tied up while a man repeatedly beat it, prompting residents to call for an arrest.

Residents tell BBN that the owner of the dog has since left the village and has not returned since learning he may be facing charges. Meanwhile, residents have arranged for the dog to be taken away and placed in a more suitable home.

The investigation comes after an Orange Walk police officer was charged with cruelty to an animal in January 2025 when video footage allegedly showed him striking a dog with a machete.
